I actually saw this advertisement on TV several times before it actually caught my eye. The first thought that came to me was: Does this even work? I’m not a rocket scientist nor an electrical engineer, but I know enough science to understand that a microwave uses water to heat up whatever is in the microwave.
So why is this important to a potato chip maker?
Before I actually talk about that, let me describe this potato chip maker NOT As Seen On TV. The potato chip maker is essentially just a tray with slots to put the thin potato slices on it. The guy on TV demonstrates this by using a knife and cutting up thin slices from the potato. Then the slices are placed on this tray, which is said to be specially designed to ensure maximum air flow. Microwave for a minute or so, and the chips are ready. The presenters on TV must either really like the chips they’ve made or they are faking it BIG TIME.
If you’ve microwaved fried food before, you will realize that you cannot get a crunchy result. After you’ve microwaved it, you will see that it is not crunchy at all. It feels all soft and squishy. If you don’t believe me, you better NOW!
I’ve had the experience with microwaved chicken nuggets. Call me crazy if you want to, but I did microwave chicken nuggets. After one minute in the microwave, my nuggets look like they have been steam cooked. It is not possible to use a microwave and get a fried texture, I have tried it first hand. This is why I am so confident to say that the Potato Chip Maker is a waste of money.
Now, you are probably wondering how it is possible for a company to sell a product that doesn’t work. I actually shouldn’t say that the Potato Chip Maker doesn’t work at all; it works, but you have some really messed up chips.
The key to using the Potato Chip Maker is to over cook the potato slices. When you over cook using a microwave, you end up with no water or close to no water in the slices. This way, your chips will have a really dry taste. Just because it is dry, it doesn’t make it taste any better. When you chew it, it will be pretty hard. In the end, it is more like Not As Seen On TV Potato Chip Maker.
I realize that there are more than one version of this product, but the concept is still the same. If you really must try to see if it is worth buying, cut up a few thin slices and use a plate at home. It will get the job done just fine.
